God is sitting in Heaven when a scientist says to Him, “Lord, we don’t
need you anymore. Science has finally figured out a way to create life
out of nothing. In other words, we can now do what you did in the
‘beginning’.”
“Oh, is that so? Tell me…” replies God.
“Well”, says the scientist, “we can take dirt and form it into the
likeness of you and breathe life into it, thus creating man.”
“Well, that’s interesting. Show Me. “
So the scientist bends down to the earth and starts to mold the soil.
“Oh no, no, no…” interrupts God,
“Get your own dirt.”
The great champion Muhammad Ali was once asked what in life he considered real. The champion replied, “I would have to say that for me, the only thing that is real is the spiritual. Only god and love are real. Pain, sickness, old age, even death, cannot master me because they are not real to me. Fame, wealth, and material things are empty and meaningless without a developed spirituality. We give them value and importance in our lives. But we must be careful not to value them too much at the expense of what really matters in life. Honesty, integrity, kindness and friendship are the true treasures we should be seeking”.
The Serenity prayer, popularized by the twelve step program but attributed to the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, says. ” O God, grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference”.
Gandhi said “the world has enough for everyone’s needs, but never even enough for even one man’s greed”.
Meister Eckhart is amongst one of the most important of the Christian mystics who said “the eye through which I see God is the eye through which he sees me, my eye and God’s eye are one eye, one seeing, one knowing, one love”.
